huge bamboo in the garden

Rodo gave us a tour today of the garden and a guided walk through the forest. The Wilson Botanical Garden featuring beautifully diverse plantings of tropical and subtropical ornamentals, representatives of unusual plant families and rare and endangered plants from Costa Rica and elsewhere. It also boasts remarkable collections of cycads, tree ferns, aroids, bromeliads, gingers, heliconias, marantas, and palms. We learned about the native and non-native species in the garden. There is a plant called the Bromelia that has been here for about 19 years and it still hasn’t bloomed(after they bloom they die); Rodo hopes to see one bloom because he’s been working here years and hasn’t seen one bloom yet. We saw some caterpillars that have evolved overtime to change their colors to red and yellow to show predators that they are dangerous as a self-defense mechanism. We also seen a moth that lands on trees vertically only because the pattern on its wings are vertical. He also told us about a mammal that he would give a prize to someone if they caught it. It sounded easy but he said he’s had that same prize for 10 years because no one has been able to catch it (Zane almost caught it but he wasn’t ninja enough :p ) We went through two different types of forests a secondary and primary forest. You could see the difference between the secondary and primary forests because in the primary we started to see more insects, birds and amphibians there.  The hike back to the station was hard difficult in our rain boots and plus it was muddy but I felt great afterwards. Since we will be doing a lot of hiking we will probably all be built by the time the 2 weeks is up :D.  In our meeting, we learned some specifics about the projects we’ll be doing and we got to check out the lab equipment. Another day another adventure! :)
